Pendleton, Oregon, was a wheat-shipping and wool town on the Umatilla River in 1911, and its Round-Up was only a year or two old. Local business leaders had started the rodeo in 1910 to celebrate the eastern Oregon ranching and farming economy, and the railroad that ran through town carried grain and livestock out to market. This photograph records the opening day of the 1911 event, when cowboys, ranch hands, and visitors filled the grandstands and the arena. Many of the riders came from the surrounding ranches, and the Umatilla Indian Reservation lay close by, so the crowds mixed ranchers, townspeople, and tribal families. Residents of the time would have known the Round-Up as their town's big annual event, one that drew attention well beyond the county.
