Pendleton, Oregon, in 1911 was a wheat and wool town in the Umatilla County hills, shipping grain and fleece by rail to markets farther west. The Pendleton Round-Up had begun only the year before, when local businessmen and ranchers staged a contest of riding and roping to draw visitors to town. The grand review, a parade of riders and horses through the streets, showed off the cowboys, ranch hands, and Umatilla Indian people who took part, and it gave the town a public way to present itself to the surrounding countryside. For residents, the event marked a new pride in the ranching life that had shaped the region since the cattle drives and the arrival of the railroad.
