Pendleton, Oregon, in 1911 was a wheat and wool town on the Umatilla River, shipping grain and wool out by rail toward Portland. That fall the Round-Up, a rodeo and livestock show begun only the year before, drew cowboys, ranchers, and visitors to town, and a local band like this one was a fixture of its parades and grandstand programs. Cattlemen and farmers counted the event as civic pride, while the nearby Umatilla Indian Reservation, whose people had lived along these rivers for generations, stood largely outside the celebration's promotion. Many residents knew Pendleton as much for those autumn crowds as for its farms and freight.
