Pendleton, a wheat and wool town in Umatilla County in northeastern Oregon, staged this Round-Up parade in 1911, only the second year of the rodeo that had started in 1910. The town had grown up around the railroad and the grain warehouses that moved wheat off the surrounding plateau, and its sheep and woolen trade gave it a reputation well beyond the county. Riders from the Umatilla Indian Reservation, including members of the Umatilla, Cayuse and Walla Walla peoples, took part in the procession in regalia alongside ranch hands and cowboys. Residents that fall would have known Pendleton as a prosperous, still-rough town whose Round-Up was becoming its best-known public event.
