Seamen of the cruiser U.S.S. *Boston* posed together for this group portrait, which the Detroit Publishing Company dated to about 1899. The ship was a protected cruiser named for the city of Boston, and it served in the Pacific during the Spanish-American War. Detroit Publishing's photographers traveled widely, and their views of ships and sailors were sold as souvenirs and picture postcards. The date and other details come from an old caption card that has not been verified, so the exact circumstances of the photograph remain uncertain.
