Seen from the high ground of Roxbury, a town just southwest of the Boston peninsula, this 1828 engraving looks back across open land and water toward the city's steeples and rooftops. Its crisp outlines reflect the engraving methods common in American city views of the early nineteenth century, when printed prospects reached residents and visitors alike. According to the caption card, which the record marks as unverified, T. Kelley engraved the plate from a drawing by J.R. Smith, and Samuel Walker published it. Views taken from such vantage points were prized for showing a city's growth and setting at a glance.
