Dated March 17, 1776, this engraving records the day British troops sailed out of Boston Harbor, ending a long standoff that had begun with the fighting at Lexington and Concord in April 1775. American forces under George Washington had fortified Dorchester Heights in early March, placing artillery that threatened the British fleet. Rather than risk an assault, the British commander, William Howe, withdrew his army and many Loyalist residents by sea to Halifax. The caption card gives no date for the print itself, so it was made at some point after the event it depicts.
