The subject here is the morning the British army sailed out of Boston on March 17, 1776, ending a siege that had held the town since the spring of 1775. Washington's artillery on Dorchester Heights had made the harbor untenable for the British fleet, and the evacuation was a rare American victory in the early war. This engraving was made later, from a drawing by L. Hollis, and cut by F.T. Stuart for an illustrated edition of Abbott's *Lives of the Presidents*. Its origin as a book illustration, rather than a contemporary view, is worth keeping in mind when reading the scene.
