The title names Lord Howe, but the army commander at Boston was his brother, Sir William Howe, whose troops left the city by sea on March 17, 1776. The departure followed a siege that turned after Continental forces under George Washington fortified Dorchester Heights and threatened the British ships and garrison. The engraving was made around 1861, roughly eight decades later, by J. Godfrey after a painting by M. A. Wageman, so it shows how nineteenth-century artists imagined the Revolution rather than an eyewitness view.
