Ellis Island is the setting for a group the caption calls "one of the 1000 marriageable girls," who arrived aboard the steamship Baltic. The phrase shows how the press liked to frame immigrant arrivals as romantic curiosities rather than ordinary passengers passing through inspection. The photographer, George Grantham Bain, sold news pictures like this to newspapers, and Ellis Island, the main federal immigrant inspection station since 1892, was where many such stories were reported.
