Labeled "ZR 1," this glass negative appears to show the Navy's first rigid airship, which the service later named USS Shenandoah. The date on the plate, September 22, 1923, falls only weeks after the airship's first flight, when the Navy was still testing whether rigid airships could serve as scouts and long-range patrol craft. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that produced large numbers of news and portrait images, made the plate, so it reflects the everyday press photography of the period. The streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coating, and they are worth noticing as part of the negative's history.
