The record identifies this view only as Murray, Wash., dated 1923, and the place name is the main clue to what it shows. It is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that photographed the capital and many other places across the country in the early twentieth century. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Visible streaks and blemishes are likely the result of deterioration in the original coating, so the image may look softer or more mottled than the scene itself did.
