The title names two people, N. Chalmers and H. Farland, though the National Photo Company recorded those names without verification, so the identities remain uncertain. The studio was a Washington, D.C., commercial firm that produced large numbers of glass negatives, many of them portraits and scenes of local life, during the early twentieth century. This small plate, dated to about 1923 from negatives in the same run, came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion coatings.
