The title names a woman, Senora Augusto Mendos Leal, but the record notes that the name is unverified and was taken from the negative or its sleeve. The glass plate is dated September 19, 1923, and comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that produced many portraits and views of city life in the early twentieth century. Like many glass negatives of its era, it shows streaks and blemishes from natural deterioration of the original coating, flaws worth keeping in mind when studying the image. Herbert A. French donated the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
