Calderara is named here as a Lieutenant Commander, a naval rank that reflects his service in the Italian navy, where he became one of the country's earliest aviators. He trained in powered flight with the Wright brothers in 1909, and he helped establish Italy's first military aviation program. The National Photo Company made portraits and news pictures in Washington, D.C., during the early twentieth century, and this image likely reflects that studio work. The glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which is part of its character as a surviving record.
