The record identifies this view as the Peace Monument in Atlanta, though the Bain News Service supplied that title without verification, so the exact site and date remain open. Atlanta's memorials from the early twentieth century often honored the Civil War and the reconciliation that followed it, and a monument with "peace" in its name would have spoken to that era of sectional healing. The picture is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made mostly between about 1900 and the early 1920s. Its value lies in showing how a public monument looked to a press photographer of that period, including its setting and the street life around it.
