Leslie Carter, the actress, is the figure on this tall color lithograph from 1899, a poster of the sort theaters hung on storefronts and walls to draw audiences to a show. It was printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York, one of the largest American firms of its day for theatrical posters, and the notes credit the Russell-Morgan Print as well. Carter was a well-known stage star of the late 1890s, and her portrait posters helped build the celebrity culture that surrounded touring dramatic actresses of that era.
