Lydia Barry was an American actress whose name was set in large letters across this 1899 color lithograph, one of the many theatrical posters that Buffalo's Courier Litho. Company produced for touring productions. The poster is printed in color on a tall sheet about 102 by 72 centimeters, the scale that let it stand out on a street wall or in a theater lobby. Its Russell-Morgan Print credit and the Kane, Shipman & Colvin notation show the work passed through the hands of more than one firm, a common arrangement in the era when touring companies ordered posters from specialist printers. Such posters were built to catch a passerby's eye in a few seconds, which makes them a useful record of how stars were marketed at the turn of the century.
