The record places this glass negative at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, with a title describing the laying of a keel for a vessel named New York. A keel-laying marked the start of a warship's construction, and the yard was one of the country's major naval shipbuilding works in the early twentieth century. The Bain News Service, the New York photo agency whose founder gave the collection its name, supplied news pictures to newspapers and magazines. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the agency provided that has not been independently verified, so the exact occasion is uncertain.
