Clotheslines strung across a tenement yard in New York City make this one of the more domestic views in the Detroit Publishing Company's urban photographs. Taken sometime between 1900 and 1910, the glass-plate negative shows the crowded back courtyards of the city's tenement housing, where laundry hung between buildings because families had little other room to dry it. The Detroit Publishing Company, based in Michigan, sold views like this widely as postcards and prints, and its large-format plates preserve remarkable detail of everyday working life in the period.
