Laundry strung between the brick walls of this New York tenement yard shows how much household work spilled into shared outdoor space. Tenement yards of this era were used by many families for washing, drying clothes and letting children play, and the tall surrounding buildings left little sunlight or air. The glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for commercial views of cities and landscapes, and it dates from roughly 1900 to 1910. Its subject is everyday urban housing rather than a monument, which makes it a useful record of living conditions in the period.
