Bryan's body lies in state at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in the Navy Yard area of Washington, D.C., in this view dated July 30, 1925. Bryan, three-time Democratic presidential nominee and former secretary of state, had died on July 26 in Dayton, Tennessee, days after the Scopes "Monkey Trial," in which he had served as prosecutor. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio, made the negative, so the image records the public mourning in the capital before his burial at Arlington National Cemetery.
