Dry docks at the New York Navy Yard in Brooklyn lifted ships out of the water so crews could scrape, repair, and repaint their hulls, and this glass negative records one of them in late December 1925. The yard on Wallabout Bay dates to 1801 and served for much of its history as a central base for building and maintaining the Navy's ships. The negative belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a commercial studio that documented American cities and institutions in the 1910s and 1920s. The glass shows streaks and other blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
