Home-based flower making filled the cramped rooms of New York's tenement houses in this scene, where workers finished delicate paper and fabric blossoms for piecework pay. The trade was typical of crowded immigrant neighborhoods in the 1910s, when families and small contractors turned out garments, flowers and other goods from their apartments. The glass negative came from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded American life across the country, and its date is only a range, 1909 to 1919. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coatings.
