The Dakota, the steep-roofed building on Central Park West at 72nd Street, stood out when it went up in the early 1880s, as wealthy New Yorkers were only beginning to accept living in apartments rather than private houses. Architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh gave it gables, dormers, and a German Renaissance character that set it apart from the brownstones nearby. This glass negative is from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely in the years before 1915 recording American cities and landmarks.
