Lithographer Strobridge & Co. printed this 1896 poster for *Rice's Beautiful Evangeline*, a musical burlesque staged by producer Edward E. Rice, who took his story loosely from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1847 poem about two lovers separated during the expulsion of the Acadians. The sheet's caption names a figure called "Catherine," and the catalog subject headings point to women's clothing, so the costumes were clearly part of the appeal. Late nineteenth-century theater posters like this one were built to catch the eye from street corners, and their bright color and fashionable dress show how producers marketed spectacle to the public.
