Mattoon, in Coles County in east central Illinois, was in 1884 a young railroad town whose growth followed the tracks. Its position where major rail lines crossed made it a shipping point for grain, livestock, and goods moving between the prairie farms around it and larger markets. Warehouses, grain elevators, and shops clustered near the depots, and the residential streets grew outward from them as new workers and merchants arrived. Local residents in the 1880s would have known the town first for its trains and the commerce they carried, and civic life centered on churches, schools, and the business district that served the surrounding farm families.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Mattoon, Illinois, drawn in 1884. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
