Kankakee, Illinois, in 1869 was a young railroad town on the Kankakee River, roughly fifty miles south of Chicago. Its growth dated to the Illinois Central Railroad, whose main line reached the settlement in the mid-1850s and made it a shipping point for grain and lumber bound for Chicago. Kankakee had recently become the seat of the county that bears its name, and its residents were building churches, stores, and businesses along the tracks as the prairie farms around them expanded. People who had lived through the Civil War had seen farm prices and freight traffic rise in its wake, and they knew the town mainly as a stop on the Illinois Central's long run south toward Cairo.
