Geneva, Illinois, in 1869 was a small farming and milling town on the Fox River in Kane County, roughly forty miles west of Chicago. Its economy rested on the river's water power, which turned mill wheels for grain and lumber, and on the farms of the surrounding prairie that sent their produce to market. The railroad, which had reached the area by the 1850s, linked Geneva to Chicago and the wider Midwest, and it made the town a practical place to ship grain and goods. Residents of the period would have known Geneva for its river, its mills, and the county government that shaped local life. The bird's-eye view captures the town as its people saw it, with the river at the center of commerce and daily work.
