El Paso, Illinois, a small town in Woodford County, was in 1869 a farming community whose fortunes rested on the prairie around it. Corn, oats, and wheat grown on nearby farms moved by rail, and the town's grain shipping tied it to the markets of Chicago, a few score miles to the northeast. Residents in these years were still rebuilding local life after the Civil War, and the growth of churches, schools, and businesses along the main streets reflected a settled, mostly agricultural population. A bird's-eye view from this moment shows a town still defined by its railroad line and the open fields that fed it.
