Clinton, Illinois, the seat of DeWitt County, appears in this 1869 bird's-eye view drawn by A. Ruger and printed by the Merchant's Lithographing Company. By then the town's fortunes rested on farming and trade in the surrounding prairie, and the Illinois Central Railroad, which had reached the area in the early 1850s, gave local farmers a way to ship grain and livestock to Chicago and beyond. The county courthouse and the commercial blocks around the square made Clinton the center of local government and buying and selling. In 1869 the country was still absorbing the Civil War, and the transcontinental railroad had just been completed that May, a national event that residents of railroad towns like Clinton would have followed closely.
