Manteno, Illinois, in 1869 was a young railroad stop on the prairie of northeastern Illinois, in the part of Kankakee County that the Illinois Central Railroad had opened to settlement in the 1850s. Its economy rested on the surrounding farms, where corn, oats, and livestock were raised on land that had recently been drained and broken for the plow. Grain and livestock moved out by rail to Chicago, the region's dominant market, so the depot and the shipping yards were the town's center of commerce. Residents in the years after the Civil War would have known Manteno chiefly as a farming community tied to the railroad, with its fortunes rising and falling alongside the prices of crops.
