Monmouth, the seat of Warren County in western Illinois, was about four decades old when this 1869 bird's-eye view was drawn, and the town was still shaped by the farm economy around it. Corn, wheat, and livestock from the surrounding prairie moved through its shipping points, and the railroads that reached the county in the 1850s had tied local farmers to Chicago and the wider Midwest markets. The town's churches, courthouse square, and schools anchored civic life, and Monmouth College, founded in the 1850s by a Presbyterian congregation, gave the place an educational reputation that reached well beyond Warren County. The Civil War had ended only a few years earlier, and the drawing captures a community that was growing, rebuilding its commercial blocks, and proud of the new brick buildings going up along its streets.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Monmouth, Illinois, drawn in 1869. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
