Johnny Evers, the Cubs' second baseman, is shown here in a 1910 glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of the day's news. Evers was part of the Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance double-play combination that made the Chicago club famous in the early 1900s, and the Cubs won National League pennants in several of those years. Evers was known as a scrappy, intellectual player who studied the game closely, which made him a memorable figure for fans and reporters. The Library of Congress dates the picture to 1910 based on research by the Society for American Baseball Research.
