Ed Ruelbach is shown here in a Chicago National League uniform, the Cubs' flannels of the early 1910s, when the team was among the strongest in the league. The Bain News Service caption card spells the name "Ruelback," while the title follows the spelling used in later baseball research, a common mix-up for players of that era. Bain's glass negatives were made for a New York photo agency that sold pictures to newspapers, so portraits like this one circulated widely as the sport grew in popularity. The Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee helped confirm the date and identity.
