Taken around 1895, this portrait shows General R.A. Sherman, and its record places him in Monrovia, the Liberian capital founded by the American Colonization Society and named for President James Monroe. The society sent free Black Americans and other emigrants to the West African coast from 1822, and Liberia declared independence in 1847, keeping its own government and military titles for decades afterward. Portraits like this one show how Monrovia's leaders presented themselves in the 1890s, just as European powers were drawing the colonial borders that would surround the young republic.
