Shown full length and facing the camera, Wu Peifu stands in the stiff, formal manner that military portraits of the period often adopted. Wu, born in 1874, was one of the most influential commanders in northern China in the early 1920s, when rival regional armies competed for control of Beijing and the central government. The photograph is dated around 1921, a period when his Zhili faction was at the height of its power. Portraits like this one circulated as evidence of a commander's authority, so the uniform, pose, and direct gaze were as much political statements as personal likenesses.
