This pairing is unusual among Roger Fenton's Crimean portraits because it shows a senior general seated beside a junior officer rather than a single sitter. Lieutenant-General Sir John Campbell was killed during the assault on the Redan at Sevastopol in June 1855, so the picture records him in the final months of his life. Fenton made the salted paper print in the Crimea in 1855, when he was documenting British army officers and camp life for a British public following the war. The image is often read as a view of the close working ties between commanders and their staff.
