This glass negative, numbered 043803 by the Detroit Publishing Company, is a rare survivor among its plates in that its paper jacket carries a crayon drawing, and the cataloger's title suggests a nude figure that may have a mythological theme. The 8 x 10 inch plate dates from roughly 1905 to 1915, when the company was best known for its views of American cities, resorts, and landscapes, and when figure studies often served as models for painters and illustrators. The record notes that the negative was a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, so it passed through several hands before reaching the Library of Congress. The drawing on the sleeve is worth a closer look, since it may show how the plate was used or filed.
