The Polo Grounds was a ballpark in Upper Manhattan, near what is now Harlem, and it took its name from the polo matches once played on the site. The New York Giants made it their home from 1891 until 1957, and the stadium was rebuilt in concrete and steel after a fire in 1911. It hosted some of the sport's most famous moments, including Bobby Thomson's 1951 pennant-winning home run and Willie Mays's catch in the 1954 World Series. The ballpark's odd dimensions, including its short right-field fence and deep center field, made it memorable to players and fans alike.
