The matchup on September 9, 1890, pitted San Francisco against Oakland at the California League Grounds, a contest between two Bay Area cities that were rivals on the field as well as across the water. Baseball on the West Coast was then organized into regional leagues, and games like this drew local crowds who followed their hometown clubs closely. The year 1890 was also turbulent for the sport nationally, as the Players' League challenged the established major leagues over player pay and control. Look closely at the crowd and the ballpark layout for a sense of how the game was watched in the late nineteenth century.
