The St. George Beautiful Grounds were a sporting field in the St. George section of Staten Island, within easy reach of the ferry landing, which made them convenient for crowds arriving from Manhattan and across the harbor. The site was first associated with cricket, but as baseball grew in popularity across New York in the late 1800s, it hosted many games. Posters like this one were a main way teams and organizers announced upcoming contests to local fans. The bold lettering and crowded layout typical of sporting bills of the period are worth noticing.
