This 1888 card from the California League stands out because most baseball cards of the period focus on major league clubs rather than regional circuits. S.F. Hess & Company, a tobacco firm, issued it as a chromolithograph, a multicolor printing process that let manufacturers turn out bright, inexpensive images in quantity. Companies of the era packed such cards into their products to encourage repeat purchases, and collectors later saved them, which is how this example came to be part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection. The title was devised by Library of Congress staff.
