Early in the morning, before the gates opened, a crowd of New York fans lines up outside the Polo Grounds, the ballpark the New York Giants shared in upper Manhattan for decades. The title marks the hour, 7:00 a.m., which tells us these supporters arrived long before first pitch to secure seats for a World Series game in the early 1910s. The photograph comes from the Bain News Service, a wire-photo agency whose founder, George Grantham Bain, built a large archive of news pictures now held by the Library of Congress. Pictures like this capture the eagerness of a city that treated the Series as a major public event.
