O.R. Hanson's 1923 chromolithograph sets Chicago's stained-glass churches beside the tracks of its elevated railroad. Printed in Chicago by the National Printing & Engraving Company, it was made by a process that built color through many successive stone impressions, a method well suited to the bold, saturated look of commercial art in that period. Its focus on church windows against the elevated lines, which had run through city neighborhoods since the 1890s, shows how Chicago's religious architecture and its transit system shared the same streets.
