Rather than a single hero, this lithograph gathers a long roster of named Irishmen onto one sheet, from Theobald Wolfe Tone, leader of the 1798 rising, to Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, who fought the long Nine Years' War against Elizabethan rule. Several of the figures were soldiers who made their careers abroad, including Patrick Sarsfield, who served France after the Williamite War ended. Published in New York in 1873 by Patrick O'Farrell, the print reflects the pride Irish-American communities took in remembering exiled soldiers and patriots, and its costumed figures speak to a broader theme of Irish history and politics.
