Drawn from an elevated oblique viewpoint, this Baltimore panorama presents the city as it stood in the late 1860s, with its streets, buildings and waterfront laid out in close detail. The maker, E. Sachse & Co., specialized in bird's-eye city views, a popular format after the Civil War, when civic boosters and property owners wanted a recognizable picture of their towns. As a busy Chesapeake port, Baltimore made a rich subject, and the wharves and dense blocks of houses reward careful study. The title gives 1869 as the drawing year, while the record lists 1870 as the date.
