This 1852 bird's-eye view, published in Baltimore by E. Sachse & Co., shows the national capital from an elevated vantage point, with its broad avenues and government buildings laid out in perspective. Edward Sachse's firm produced many such city views in the mid-1800s, when lithographed panoramas were a popular way for Americans to see growing cities they might never visit. The Capitol and the unfinished Washington Monument, then still only partly built, are among the features that make the map worth a closer look as a record of the city in its early development.
