Few American cities were recorded from above as carefully as Washington in this 1857 panorama, which shows the capital in a sweeping bird's-eye view. E. Sachse & Co. produced many such city views in the 1850s, and viewers can trace individual streets, public buildings and the wide avenues of Pierre L'Enfant's original plan. The Capitol appears during its expansion, and the unfinished Washington Monument is a reminder that the city was still far from complete.
