From a vantage point high above the Capitol's unfinished dome, this 1860 lithograph by A. Sachse & Co. shows Washington spread out below in a sweeping bird's-eye view. The firm, based in Philadelphia, specialized in detailed panoramic city views that combined surveyed streets with artistic perspective. The image captures the capital on the eve of the Civil War, when the dome was still under construction and the city's broad avenues and open spaces were far less built up than they would become. Viewers today often study such maps to see how the layout of the National Mall and surrounding neighborhoods looked before later growth.
